Mission to Heal

Dr. Glenn W. Geelhoed

If you want to help, but are tired of paying for glossy brochures, bureaucratic errors, exorbitant salaries for nonprofit corporate officers, and symposiums at resort hotels for relief workers, then this is for you. Dr. Glenn Geelhoed’s patient base is the bottom billion of the world and he jokingly says he’ll treat anyone, “as long as they can’t pay.” He is Professor of International Surgery at George Washington University, Washington, DC, but he is rarely there. Rather, he is on a Mission to Heal.

Surgeon, Anthropologist, Teacher, Humanitarian

Glenn W. Geelhoed, MD FACS is a surgeon, anthropologist, teacher and humanitarian. Dedicated to serving the needs of those who have been unable to obtain medical care on a regular and much needed basis, he has spent his life serving others. His surgical volunteerism efforts have led him to provide uncompensated care to indigenous populations in Africa, Asia, the South Pacific, and Central and South America since 1965.

Dr. Geelhoed just returned from his circum-navigational medical mission trip of 2011 in early March. Immediately plans began for 2012’s, but they have been put on hold for the moment. He was asked to come to Libya and of course, he said yes.

A Lifetime Serving the Poor

Gifts from the Poor

Awards? Tons. They just don’t impress him very much. Instead, he values “Gifts from The Poor”. He does not see the poor as persons to pity, (though indeed deserving of help), but rather as persons to admire for their resilience, dignity, and intelligence. He writes about the lessons he has learned from a lifetime of serving the poor in his book that you can order on Amazon. All proceeds are donated to Medical Mission Hall of Fame which supports his missions and others like them.
